Check Out Paradise Lost & Paradise Regained

Paradise Lost & Paradise Regained Review

This is not a literal portrayal of the beginning, but it is an emotional portrayal of the greatness of God, the sentiments and fragility of mankind, and the forces of evil at work. Although Adam and Eve had to leave the garden, it leaves us with the promise that God's love and our hope in Him can never be quenched. It is so beautiful and passionate that it almost seems like a lost book of the bible.

Paradise Lost & Paradise Regained Overview

Paradise Lost is an epic poem in blank verse by the 17th-century English poet John Milton. The poem concerns the Judeo-Christian story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton's purpose, stated in Book I, is "justify the ways of God to men" and elucidate the conflict between God's eternal foresight and free will.

Not for Kindle - Sarah A. Waggoner -
The work itself is of course brilliant- the Kindle edition is abominable. I selected this edition above other Kindle editions for the footnotes. Not only are the footnotes not included in the Kindle edition, there is also not a table of contents. As I am in the midst of book IV in my paper copy and was purchasing the Kindle edition as backup while traveling, this is unfortunate. I do not care to leaf through over 100 pages looking for my place. Poor form, Amazon, poor form.

Excellent choice - A. Gift Debit Visa - Lompoc, CA USA
I really chose a good book to read for my english class. What is more awesome is that this book came really fast. And in excellent condition!

Very easy to read printing of Paradise Regained, in contrast to everything else I've seen.

Hard to read - Juan D. Lopez Medina - Medellin, Colombia, SA
Well, I am not a native english speaker, but even for an english native speaker, it's a very hard reading, due the poetry, metric and ancient words... it is a classic, beauty story, but it's better if you undertand the whole text, I cannot...

Boundaries in Dating: Making Dating Work Review

I enjoyed this book from end to end. The authors covered all the basis: from how to incorporate God into your dating, to look at personal inadequacies before engaging in a God-centered relationship, keeping yourself respect, and knowing the difference between "settling" or compromising with someone that could be a potential best friend for life.

Although some of the topics, to some degree, were not pertinent to my life, they were, however were good reads and reference points for the future. I don't think that these boundaries are necessarily just for romantic relationships. These ideas can easily be related to interpersonal friendships.

Highly Recommend Boundaries In Dating - russ giamanco -
This book was a great source of healing and comfort for me in my time of crisis, as I had just broken up with my fiance. As I was doing the autopsy of the relationship, I was able to identify and understand the dynamics of what had taken place, why our relationship got set up the way it did, and why it lead to our demise. The book is abridged and read by the authors which, I believe, helps the material be more concise and easier to absorb and integrate. Most importantly, I was able to see the dysfunctional items that belonged to me as well as to my partner. I highly recommend this material; either book or audio CD version.

Excellent advice for dating - Christine Stevenson -
I liked this book alot. It had very good advice, things I wish I had already considered and would have saved myself a whole lot of trouble. I will definately try and use what I have learned.

Great book! - JP -
Boundaries in Dating has a lot of great information for dating relationships as well as other relationships in general. Every teenager, older single, and divorcee should read the book before getting involved in another relationship or before going any further in a current relationship. Even married couples could benefit from reading it. Gives great insight for personality and character traits to look for and those to avoid (both in yourself and in others). Boundaries in Dating

NIV Student Bible Review

When it comes to any version of the bible, a bible is a bible is a bible. Not really. I have basic bibles, study bibles, and even electronic bibles but this one is something I require in my library.

Why? Because of the additional material. Material that helps explain what happened and why. Material that points you to other reference material. The extra material is placed throughout the bible right near the passage it is referring to.

There are three different reading tracks; one to learn about Jesus, one to read the high points of the bible, and one to read the entire bible.

There are lists of important information, a complete subject guide, and maps that help to understand and see what is going on in the bible.

This is a great bible for a beginner just trying to get an understanding of the bible or for someone who wants to study the bible. At a minimum, take a couple of minutes to review it.

Pastor Mike Butler

A Lineage of Grace (Christian Softcover Originals) Review

Frances Rivers does a wonderful job of making the bible come alive. Although the stories are in novel form she is careful to stay as biblical as possible. I don't always think about what the women in the bible may have gone through to be used by the Lord and the author really makes you think about it. This is a wonderful book to help you understand the biblical woman in her culture. The questions at the end of each story help you to apply what these women went to your life as well as helping you to stop and think about how God used those around these women. It is a great book for a book study or woman's bible study.

Check Out Go-Givers Sell More (Your Coach in a Box) for $13.59

Go-Givers Sell More (Your Coach in a Box) Review

In December of 2007, I reviewed a business parable called The Go-Giver - and you can read my recommendation here.

I've known for over a year that a sequel was coming, titled Go-Givers Sell More. The book has just been published and I just received a copy. I was in-the-know about the title, but not clear on the content. This book isn't a sequel, in that it extends the story of the first book, or is a story at all. Rather, it is a tightly written book full of great advice, counsel and approaches that are based on the concepts of The Go-Giver cast into the world of sales.

The premise of the initial book, "Shifting your focus from getting to giving is not only a very nice way to live life and conduct business, but a very profitable one as well" is expanded and made even more practical for anyone who sells (which is all of us) in this book.

Each chapter is short and could be read as a standalone bite. These chapters are categorized into "The Five Laws of Stratospheric Success, which are:

The Law of Value
The Law of Compensation
The Law of Influence
The Law of Authenticity
The Law of Receptivity

This categorization makes sense and ties this volume back to the initial book as well. I have not yet read the entire book, as I just received my copy last evening. I can say that I have read more than enough to recommend it whole-heartedly, and I can say with confidence that before you read this, I will have completed the book.

With any book in a series the first question people ask is, "Do I need to read the first to gain value from the second?" While a valid question, this book ties the two together without making assumptions that you have read the first. Perhaps you were aware of The Go-Giver but aren't a fan of the parable/novel format. If so, I strongly encourage you to read this as the content is excellent and written in a format more useful for you.

On the other hand if you like the parable approach, I recommend you buy not just this book, but The Go-Giver as well. I will likely go back and re-read it after finishing this wonderful little book.

Go-Givers Sell More (Your Coach in a Box) Overview

from Go-Givers Sell More:

The great upside-down misconception about sales is that it's an effort to get something from others. The truth is that sales at its best-at its most effective-is precisely the opposite: it is about giving. Giving time, attention, counsel, education, empathy, and value. In fact, the word sell comes from the Old English word sellan, which means-you guessed it-to give. And curiously, the more you give, the more you receive. Great salespeople are not great because they have mastered "the close," or because they give a dazzling presentation, or because they can shoot holes in any customer objection from fifty paces. Genuinely great salespeople create a vast and spreading sphere of good will wherever they go. They enrich, enhance and add value to people's lives. They make people happier.

The Go-Giver took the business world by storm with its message that giving is the simplest, most fulfilling, and most effective path to success. It has inspired more than 125,000 readers; but some have wondered how the story's lessons stand up to the tough challenges of everyday, real-world business. Bob Burg and John David Mann answer that question in Go-Givers Sell More, a practical guide that turns giving into the cornerstone of a powerful and effective approach to selling.

Most of us think of sales as a struggle to make people do something they don't really want to do. But that cutthroat mentality makes the process much harder than it has to be-especially in an economic downturn when customers are more suspicious and defensive than ever. It's far more effective (and satisfying) when salespeople think like Go-Givers and focus exclusively on creating value for the customer. Cultivate a trusting relationship and provide outstanding service, say the authors, and great results will follow automatically. Illustrating their points with a wide range of real-life examples, Burg and Mann offer tips and strategies that anyone in sales can start applying right away.

After reading "The Go-Giver", this was an obvious choice. This is as well written and gives excellent examples for how to practice the qualities of a Go-Giver. Seinfeld and Selling - Stephen D. Gladis -
Go-Givers Sell More by Bob Burg and John David Mann (Portfolio published by the Penguin Group, 2010) reviewed by Steve Gladis, Ph.D. (For an extended review also, see: [...])

In an episode of Seinfeld, my all-time favorite sitcom, George Costanza starts doing the opposite of what "old George" would do, because whatever old George did, it never worked out the way he wanted. The minute he starts doing the opposite of what he would have done, George meets with success. Go-Givers Sell More preaches rather convincingly that George was right. The authors of a previous giant best selling business fable, The Go-Giver, Burg and Mann have created a sales manual for every person who wants to provide a product or service for fee. The trick is never to sell...do the opposite--give. Start with value, don't end with it. Talk less, listen more. Ask what you can do--not if they'll buy your product or service. Their model is the opposite of the old sales model that had sales people prospect, qualify, present to them, and finally close the deal. Rather, their sales model is to create value, touch people's lives, build networks, be real and stay open. There are Five Laws of Stratospheric Success: The Laws of Value, Compensation, Influence, Authority, and Receptivity. Why am I so passionate about this? Because it works! I've practiced an iteration of this model for years, but these guys have given it structure, definition, and legitimacy. It's a book I'll be buying for a number of my friends.

The Old Testament: Our Call To Faith and Justice Review

I teach high school religion and decided to use this book as my textbook for the Old Testament. I am extremely happy with the book. It contains an incredible wealth of knowledge, but is still easy enough for high school freshwomen to understand. I am especially impressed with the carefully thought out wording of the book. The wording does not make judgements for the reader, but instead it allows the reader to decide things for herself. Overall, this is a great book for learning about the Old Testament, and it is honest in what it says about the bible, which is very hard to find.

The Old Testament: Our Call To Faith and Justice Overview

The Old Testament: Our Call to Faith and Justice has been found in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Old Testament: Our Call to Faith and Justice offers high school students a comprehensive overview of the major themes, lessons, and people of the Old Testament. It covers the story of salvation from many perspectives, including both the Catholic understanding of the scripture and how the original hearers of God s Word understood its meaning. The text shows Jesus prefigured in the Old Testament, especially as Messiah and Savior, and chronicles the role of the Church in interpretation of scripture. It presents the Church as foreshadowed from the beginning of creation and prepared for in a remarkable way through the history of the people of Israel and the Old Covenant. Each chapter includes several special features:Panel activities that help the students foster total learning in hands (service), hearts (prayer), and mind (academic challenges). Review questions for each main section. Several Journal Assignments for deeper thought and reflection. Key vocabulary terms set off in margin panels. A Learn by Doing project for each chapter that provides a longer-term assignment. A Called to Prayer feature offering text from a prayer relevant to the chapter theme. I was informed that the delivery service left it will the doorman the evening of the day I was supposed to receive it. I had purchased other books for my son, and did receive it next day on time(to my office suite). This time, it was not brought to my suite and was delivered much later than expected. I did not think that was fair since I paid for next day, and was promised on the web site for Amazon, to receive it much earlier.

History Is Wrong Overview

Erich von Daniken again shows his flair for revealing the truths that his contemporaries have missed. After closely analyzing hundreds of ancient and apparently unrelated texts, he is now ready to proclaim that human history is nothing like the world religions claim and he has the proof!

In History Is Wrong, Erich von Daniken takes a closer look at the fascinating Voynich manuscript, which has defied all attempts at decryption since its discovery, and makes some intriguing revelations about the equally incredible Book of Enoch.

Von Daniken also unearths the astounding story of a lost subterranean labyrinth in Ecuador that is said to be home to an extensive library of thousands of gold panels. He supplies evidence that the metal library has links not only to the Book of Enoch but also to the Mormons, who have spent decades searching for it, believing it to contain the history of their forefathers.

And what about the mysterious lines in the desert of Nazca that resemble landing strips when viewed from the air? Archeologists claim they are ancient procession routes. Think again! cries von Daniken, as he reveals the data that the archeologists never even thought to check.

History Is Wrong will challenge your intellect...and maybe a few long-held beliefs. This is Erich von Daniken's best book in years!

The first few pages kind of caught my curiosity so I bought the Kindle version of this story. But reading a little further it becomes obvious that the writer is just grasping at straws and the whole premise is so full of nonsense that it's embarrassing to admit I bought the book in the first place.

An awful waste of money.

Reasons to Believe: How to Understand, Explain, and Defend the Catholic Faith Overview

This book unravels mysteries, corrects misunderstandings, and offers thoughtful, straightforward responses to common objections about the Catholic faith.

Bestselling author Scott Hahn, a convert to Catholicism, has experienced the doubts that so often drive discussions about God and the Church. In the years before his conversion, he was first a nonbeliever and then an anti-Catholic clergyman.

In REASONS TO BELIEVE, he explains the "how and why" of the Catholic faith—drawing from Scripture, his own struggles and those of other converts, as well as from everyday life and even natural science. Hahn shows that reason and revelation, nature and the supernatural, are not opposed to one another; rather they offer complementary evidence that God exists. But He doesn't merely exist. He is someone, and He has a personality, a personal style, that is discernible and knowable. Hahn leads readers to see that God created the universe with a purpose and a form—a form that can be found in the Book of Genesis and that is there when we view the natural world through a microscope, through a telescope, or through our contact lenses.

At the heart of the book is Hahn's examination of the ten "keys to the kingdom"—the characteristics of the Church clearly evident in the Scriptures. As the story of creation discloses, the world is a house that has a Father, a palace where the king is really present. God created the cosmos to be a kingdom, and that kingdom is the universal Church, fully revealed by Jesus Christ.

A Very Weak Study Bible - L. Jackson - Oregon, USA
While I am not a fan of the NIV translation for a variety of reasons, I purchased this Study Bible simply for the commentary and study notes. I have many Study Bibles that I frequently use and cross reference, and this is by far the least useful of them all. Many of the "notes" are simply references to other verses and passages, which is an important component in a Study Bible, but for many passages that is the only "note" included. If I simply wanted cross-references, I would have purchased a reference Bible, like a Thompson Chain-Reference Bible. When there is commentary on a passage, it's usually very watered down, and does little to clarify the meaning of the passage.

For a much better Study Bible, I would recommend any of the following
The NKJV Study Bible: Second Edition
The ESV Study Bible
NASB MacArthur Study Bible

All of these are full of very helpful and insightful interpretive and background notes on the text. You'll walk away with a far greater understanding of Scripture than with the NIV Study Bible. Don't waste your money on this. The only purpose I have for this "Study Bible" is not for the notes at all, but for teaching Sunday School for the High School students at my church, as most of them use the NIV, and it's my only copy of the translation. Even then I usually read verses from the passage I'm teaching in a better translation like the NASB, NKJV, ESV, or HCSB.

Stop and read before you buy this Bible - Timothy Blackburn - Glen Allen, VA United States
Stop and read before you purchase this book.

Many people are amazed when I tell them our family doesn't use the NIV. They immediately assume I am associated with KJV-onlyism. While I respect the grand old translation, I am not opposed to modern versions that remain true to the original text nor do I believe translations have to be stilted. In fact, I often use good modern versions for our family and personal devotions. First, I need to explain some background foundational to my position.

The differences between versions are 1) textual or the source original text and 2) translational or the philosophy of translation. I'll not argue a position on textual differences in this paper (which accounts for no more than about 8% of the differences between versions but most of the debate and division between Christians). My issue with the NIV is primarily translational. Faithful to the original versions such as the NKJV, KJV, NASB, and ESV follow a Formal Equivalence philosophy of translation, changing wording when there is a grammatical/syntax necessity. You will see many of these versions put added words in italics, while it is impossible to do so given the degree of change in the NIV.

Versions such as the NIV follow the Dynamic Equivalence form of translation, which take liberties by adding wording or phrases for non-syntax reasons and to explain versus translate the original text where the translators feel it won't be understood (whether or not the original was easily understood). Paraphrases, such as The Message, NLT, etc. completely rewrite Scripture in an interpretive sense. The NIV is somewhere between a Paraphrase and Formal Equivalent translation. Let me explain the results of an analysis I performed:

Based on a sampling of OT/NT NIV text and comparing to the original languages, I found seven Formal Equivalence versions combined took liberties (usually for syntax reasons) in only about 6% of the verses, while the NIV took liberties in 64% of the verses sampled. These were not different word choices for translation, but alterations based on what was perceived to be the thought of the author rather than the words. So, when I read the NIV, I am getting one or more of the translators' interpretation of the meaning versus the original text in about two-thirds of the verses. Dr. Martin summed up the situation well when he wrote, "The dynamic equivalence translator tends to be relatively unrestrained in his theologizing. What a formal equivalence translator generally does only as a matter of necessity, the dynamic equivalence translator often does as a matter of choice."

While I most often agree with the interpretation (although not the translation) of the NIV translators in that they generally held conservative theological views, I strongly disagree that rewriting Scripture is acceptable even to express a conservative position. If I want a commentary I'll read one. I suspect many NIV proponents would be appalled if the original Greek, Hebrew, or Aramaic were edited to improve clarity, but find it completely acceptable to do so as part of translation. The doctrine of inerrancy should also mean we are to translate accurately.

Arguments for using the NIV due to readability are not convincing to me, given there are several good readable and faithful modern versions, and I believe the Bible was hard to understand even in the first century (e.g. Peter noted that Paul's writings were hard to understand.) It is a spiritually discerned Book. While the Bible was written in common languages and there should be no attempt to make something confusing that is meant to be clear, deeper theological concepts were not easily understood. The argument that the meaning must be simplified to be understood or "explained" is similar to the arguments made before the Reformation not to translate the Bible to English - I often refer to translators and vocal proponents of such translations as the NIV as the "new priesthood."

I acknowledge the version each person uses must ultimately be between him/her and God, and I fellowship with many people who use the NIV, viewing them as brothers/sisters in Christ and Godly people. I used it for many years myself before studying the subject in depth. Unfortunately, most good-intended pastors have little if any instruction from our seminaries in Textual Criticism/translational philosophy and are completely ill equipped to treat the issue of Bible versions with their flock.

I'm not looking to enter into a debate - I am quite resolute in my convictions, prayerfully founded on solid research. Confirm what I am saying is true. Even the early Christians checked the Scriptures to check the Apostles' accuracy. You'll need to decide for yourself but I recommend you prayerfully research the matter from reliable sources, the best one being the Bible. For example, purchase or borrow an interlinear Greek/English New Testament. In it you will find the Greek wording with literal English words beneath. Select 30 verses (a generally accepted good sample size). Compare it to the NIV and any of the common Formal Equivalent translations (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV) and count the number of verses that add to or take away (or rephrase) God's Word. You don't need to know Greek to quickly see what I am writing is true. You will also see that it was not necessary to rewrite the text to be able to comprehend what was written.

Regarding research, an excellent and readable book (quoted from previously) that I recommend on the subject that is not extreme and reflects my position is "Accuracy of Translation: The Primary Criterion in Evaluating Bible Versions With Special Reference to the New International Version" by Robert P. Martin and available on Amazon for about . I recommend avoiding KJV-onlyism books, pro or con, which are long on opinion with spurious arguments but short on academic integrity, honesty, and depth.

So far in this paper, I have approached the NIV-problem technically. But there are also real-life practical experiences that steer me clear of Dynamic Equivalents and Paraphrases. While using the NIV, I eventually began to question whether the NIV was a good translation when it occurred to me it didn't match what I heard growing up, and I had a sense the original language wasn't that simplified. Later, I heard an otherwise respected preacher deliver an entire sermon based on a word found in a verse from the NIV. While reading along in my NASB, I realized the word wasn't even there - the translators added it. Later at home, I confirmed this by reviewing the original Greek.

But even more convincing are my elementary school children. At their Christian school teachers or ministers at chapel occasionally read from the NIV or paraphrases. All three children have come home and noted that what was read wasn't correct, and were appalled (from their perspective) that someone would take the Bible so lightly.

We know from the Bible that even the shapes of letters are important. What my little ones memorize can stick with them the rest of their lives, stored in their hearts that they might not sin against God. I want them to memorize the Words of God accurately reflective of the original - the NIV does not do that . . .

In closing, ask yourself an important question. If you believe the Bible contains the inspired, inerrant, and infallible Word of God, what does that mean? Does it mean the very words penned are important, or the thoughts some scholar interprets for you?

The notes that are on every page of the paper study Bible are nowhere tobe found in the Kindle version. There are other study helps but some awkward to access. The verse by verse comments, on the same page as the Bible text, are what I really wanted, but could not find.

Guided Mindfulness Meditation Review

In his book, "Full Catastrophe Living," author Jon Kabat-Zinn directs the reader through an 8-week stress-reduction program and suggests the reader use "the tapes" for guidance. These CDs are "the tapes." I highly recommend them.

Before purchasing these CDs, I tried doing some of the exercises in "Full Catastrophe Living" on my own, like the body scan. The body scan is a long and intricate meditation, and I found I couldn't learn it from reading a book.

But when I did the body scan with the CD--wow--what a difference. The CD made it so clear what to do.

There are four CDs in this package: one is the body scan, one is a sitting meditation, and two are yoga. I found them all equally useful and cannot imagine doing the 8-week program on one's own without this set.

Each disc is an exercise unto itself, with Kabat-Zinn guiding you as if he were in the room with you. There is no corny music; it's just his voice giving specific instruction. The book ("Full Catastrophe Living") makes it clear when and how often to do each exercise.

For privacy and portability, I transferred the CDs to my ipod. This worked great for the sitting meditation and body scan. With yoga, though, it's tough to use headphones without entangling oneself.

The only problem with the CDs is their cardboard-paper packaging: it scratches the discs with each use. If you plan on regularly using these CDs in your stereo, I recommend putting them in a different, non-scratch case.

Guided Mindfulness Meditation Overview

Perhaps no other person has done more to bring mindfulness meditation into the contemporary landscape of America than Jon Kabat-Zinn. Th rough a number of research studies, and through Kabat-Zinn’s pioneering work at the University of Massachusetts Medical School where he is founder of its world-renowned Stress Reduction Clinic, mindfulness is finally being recognized as a highly effective tool for dealing with stress, chronic pain, and other illnesses. Today, with a four-part home training course, Jon Kabat-Zinn offers listeners the definitive mindfulness meditation practice on CD. "We are not trying to actively achieve a state of deep relaxation—or any other state for that matter—while practicing mindfulness," he teaches. "But interestingly, by opening to an awareness of how things actually are in the present moment, we often taste very deep states of relaxation and well-being—of both body and mind." Join the bestselling author of Coming to Our Senses (Hyperion, 2005) and Wherever You Go, There You Are (Hyperion 1995) to develop and deepen your personal mindfulness practice, and to taste the universal aspects of stillness, clarity, wisdom, compassion, and well-being that Guided Mindfulness Meditation offers.

Guided Mindfulness Meditation - mom.dll -
I bought Guided Mindfulness Meditation CDs when I was diagnosed with Stage 3B Inflammatory Breast cancer. I was stressed. After 2 years, I am still using them. I really like JKZ's philosophy. I am a Christian and praying nonstop kept me rehashing everything I was going through. JKZ shows you how just to clear your mind and live in the moment and it isn't anti-religious but his method allows you to accept whatever it is you are dealing with. I like his slogan "As long as I am breathing, there is more right with me than wrong with me." Living in the moment is such a powerful thing to accomplish and JKZ shows you how. It isn't about his voice or music but about you learning to accept whatever you are dealing with here and now.

I gave my 85 year old mother both of the yoga CDs and it has also been very helpful to her. After my bilateral mastectomy the yoga CDs helped me get back in shape. Before cancer, I had no reason for an IPod or MP3 player but now I can't live without them.

JKZ's The Mindfulness for Beginners CDs has a very good explanation of JKZ's philosophy. Also a shorter version of the Body Scan which is easier to get through than the 45 minute version which is on Guided Mindfulness Meditation.

I don't sit down and do 30 minutes of guided meditation like is suggested but I take mini meditation breaks throughout the day. It is the best thing I have found to reduce stress and I am doing great now and I feel I can handle just about anything.

The real thing - Ira Silverman - Rockville, MD USA
For much of my life I had been plagued by anxiety. I had tried many different solutions from talk to medicine. These CD's were like a miracle. After a month it was like I was transformed. I felt relaxed and capable of dealing with stressful situations with no anxiety. They are a combination of meditation and some yoga (nothing exotic). It does require a substantial commitment of time. Each CD is about 45 minutes and you are supposed to listen 6 days a week. If my experience is representative you should give the plan a try.

Great! - R. Volzer - Lima, NY USA
wonderful. If I had more time every day or I was more disciplined, I would use this program more often!

The Apothecary's Daughter Review

I honestly have not read a historical romance for at least five years if not longer. My taste in books is more on the fantasy/sci-fi side of things so I typically would have never gone for this particular book - but I happened to accidentally purchase it a long time ago.

I considered deleting the book - but I decided that I should probably at least try reading it before I tossed it out so quickly. I started reading and couldn't stop!

Mind you, there were points in the book that were a little slower than others, but I was never bored of the book. The characters were so well developed and had genuine personality. I have a tendency to enjoy more eccentric characters in the books I read - but these characters were so real and well-rounded, I truly enjoyed spending time with them. The main character, Lilly, was warm at heart and I found myself able to relate with her even though we are living in completely different centuries. I was excited to choose a favorite suitor for her (considering she has many) and was pleased with how the story played out.

I haven't read a historical fiction book since I was very young and into the American Girl doll books to be completely honest. Of course there was Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, etc. in high school but I was never completely enthralled with them. This book opened up a new interest for me. I look forward to trying out some of the other Julie Klassen novels and I'm definitely going to try picking up some Jane Austen or something by the Bronte sisters again. This book certainly opened up new and different reading interests for me and I look forward to exploring them more thoroughly.

The Apothecary's Daughter Overview

Lillian Haswell, brilliant daughter of the local apothecary, yearns for more adventure and experience than life in her father's shop and their small village provides. She also longs to know the truth behind her mother's disappearance, which villagers whisper about but her father refuses to discuss. Opportunity comes when a distant aunt offers to educate her as a lady in London. Exposed to fashionable society and romance--as well as clues about her mother--Lilly is torn when she is summoned back to her ailing father's bedside. Women are forbidden to work as apothecaries, so to save the family legacy, Lilly will have to make it appear as if her father is still making all the diagnoses and decisions. But the suspicious eyes of a scholarly physician and a competing apothecary are upon her. As they vie for village prominence, three men also vie for Lilly's heart.

Bhagavad Gita: A New Translation Review

While this translation is not perfect word for word compared to other's it does offer insight into this great work. Now to rate this book as terrible simply for the fact of imperfect translation is a shame becouse is does have much to offer.
The Gita is a wonderfull work. Mitchell does not butcher bad enough that the concept is lost. You will come away from this read feeling refreshed and enlightend. Do not worry about the translation the idea's are in this book. It allways upsets me when I read complaint's about Hindu translation's, many book's like the Mahabhrata have been added to since there conception. So if that's the case what is actually the true translation? What count's is the message and this book present's it well.

Bhagavad Gita: A New Translation Overview

Stephen Mitchell is widely known for his ability to make ancient masterpieces thrillingly new, to step in where many have tried before and create versions that are definitive for our time. His celebrated version of the Tao Te Ching is the most popular edition in print, and his translations of Jesus, Rilke, Genesis, and Job have won the hearts of readers and critics alike. Stephen Mitchell now brings to the Bhagavad Gita his gift for breathing new life into sacred texts.

The Bhagavad Gita is universally acknowledged as one of the world's literary and spiritual masterpieces. It is the core text of the Hindu tradition and has been treasured by American writers from Emerson and Thoreau to T. S. Eliot, who called it the greatest philosophical poem after the Divine Comedy. There have been more than two hundred English translations of the Gita, including many competent literal versions, but not one of them is a superlative literary text in its own right.

Now all that has changed. Stephen Mitchell's Bhagavad Gita sings with the clarity, the vigor, and the intensity of the original Sanskrit. It will, as William Arrowsmith said of Mitchell's translation of The Sonnets to Orpheus, "instantly make every other rendering obsolete."

From the Hardcover edition.

Bhagavad Gita: A New Translation Specifications

On the list of the greatest spiritual books of all time, the Bhagavad Gita resides permanently in the top echelon. This poem of patently Indian genius sprouted an immense tree of devotional, artistic, and philosophical elaboration in the subcontinent. The scene is a battlefield with the prince Arjuna pitted against his own family, but no sooner does the poem begin than the action reverts inward. Krishna, Arjuna's avatar and spiritual guide, points the way to the supreme wisdom and perfect freedom that lie within everyone's reach. Worship and be faithful, meditate and know reality--these make up the secret of life and lead eventually to the realization that the self is the root of the world. In this titular translation, Stephen Mitchell's rhythms are faultless, making music of this ancient "Song of the Blessed One." Savor his rendition, but nibble around the edges of his introduction. In a bizarre mixture of praise and condescension, Mitchell disregards two millennia of Indian commentary, seeking illumination on the text from Daoism and Zen, with the Gita coming up just shy of full spiritual merit. Perhaps we should take it from Gandhi, who used the Gita as a handbook for life, that it nourishes on many levels. --Brian Bruya

Lovely Translation - Bella - Hartford, CT
This is the only version of the Gita I've read but it is beautifully written. I have heard other translations only in pieces, and although each translation brings something different and new, this particular translation is written in a way that is easy to understand and read and it sounds poetic like it's intended to be.

An Economy of Words, But Wide Breadth of Scope - Gary Reiner - Sacramento, CA USA
Stephen Mitchell is in my opinion one of the true masters of spiritual translations. He does not fall short with his rendering of the Bhagavad Gita. With an economy of words, that are terse and to the point, much like aphorisms, Mitchell fits together a majestic tapestry of broad scope. Anyone looking for the gist of the message in perhaps the fewest words available in a published work, and which keeps in mind modern sensibilities, look no further -- this is the book for you, you won't be let down.

A focus on God and on toxicity - L. R. Naimark - San Jose, CA
Starting out on the Consciousness Cleanse, I was excited. While cleaning out my garage, I'd found a blank, leatherbound journal which I took to be a good omen. The first day, I followed the cleanse instructions, carefully cutting out pictures of my dreams and goals and double-side-taping them into the journal. But, on the second and third days I kept stumbling over two things: 1) the constant references to cleansing your soul and letting God come in; and 2) a focus on consciousnesses with lots more anger and feelings of hurt than I have. I'm not really upset at anybody in my past.......I wanted to build on my mostly solid foundation and overcome some of my weaknesses. The 21-Day Cleanse wants to help people who are really damaged, it seems to me. I'll probably go back and re-attempt the cleanse again (I do have that lovely journal, after all!) but I did find all the talk about God and about toxicity to be off-putting.

21 day cleanse review - LD -
I like this book and think that it is very useful. The pages between the chapters with lists of questions are not very useful, most of the time I can't figure out how to incorporate them even though there is an explanation at the beginning.

The book is full of important questions to ask yourself. Day 3 was very difficult to do, but I feel like a mountain fell off my back! The only thing that I feel was a let down was the day on Forgiveness. That could have been a deeper, more thought provoking exercise. That could have had a meditation on how to forgive others AND oneself, but it didn't. I didn't feel like I could proceed well without that. A friend read me meditations from another work of Debbie Ford, which was helpful.

It is worth doing in any case.

Very, very helpful. - Veronica Halbert -
This book really has come to me at a time in my life when I most needed it. It takes 21 days of your life and totally cleaneses it. I was very suprised at the effectiveness and the benefits that I've had.

Tonal Harmony Review

This is definitely the best book on tonal harmony, simple and complete. Gives you all informations you need step by step. Sometimes it states "forget about this for now": well, it isn't really an issue because two or three pages after it explains what had left out before, but with more theory already explained at that stage. There're a lot of examples within the text and many tests to see if you've understood the theory.
You don't ever need a teacher to understand the concepts explained in this book: you really need one only if you're learning to play an instrument, not to understand chord functions, inversions, and cadences. This book teaches harmony, not piano or guitar solos.

Tonal Harmony Overview

For nearly two decades Tonal Harmony has been the leading text for the two-year theory curriculum for music majors. Used at nearly 800 schools, Tonal Harmony has been consistently praised for its practicality and ease of use for student and instructor alike. The straightforward approach is supported by well-chosen examples and thoughtful exercises, and the total presentation is compatible with differing teaching styles and theoretical points of view. In addition, a set outstanding ancillaries, which include a collection of audio examples on CD (for both the text and workbook) and an extensive Instructor's Manual, round out the comprehensive teaching package.

this is not a good book for musicians who are trained by ear or someone who hasnt been in music for a long time. it doesnt explain the information in some chapters you have to have a teacher to understand it completely and if you dont have a good teacher youll be in a bad position like i was. i play the piano guitar and i sing and i had trouble with this book the first 5 chapters are not that bad but once you get to the 6 and 7th chapter youre in deep do do if your teacher just trys to fly through as though youre suppose to be a expert. half of my class barely passed for one we had a teacher who knew the information but didnt know how to teach it
second the book doesnt explain the information i wouldnt recommend this book
i hate this book with a passion i have to use this book for 4 semester what a drag

My Grandfather's Blessings: Stories of Strength, Refuge, and Belonging Overview

As a small child, Rachel Remen sat at the feet of her grandfather, an orthodox rabbi and scholar of the kabbalah, and learned the secret of life: that love and blessings given to others heals our loneliness, unhappiness, and in fact all our wounds. Remen uses her power as a master storyteller to bring to life the extraordinary blessings of ordinary existence. These exquisite pieces show us how we bless and serve each other most often without knowing it, how much life gives to us, and how many of our own blessings we have still yet to receive.

There is nothing more comforting than hearing Rachel's grandfather speak of love, life, and God to a small, lonely, and very spiritual child who was trying to find her way in an unspiritual world. These are stories for keeping at the bedside, for those dark nights when we go out in search of our souls.

Rachel's grandfather has blessed not only his beloved granddaughter but, through her, has blessed us all.

My Grandfather's Blessings: Stories of Strength, Refuge, and Belonging Specifications

When doctor and author Rachel Naomi Remen (Kitchen Table Wisdom) was young, she was caught between two different views of life: that of her rabbi grandfather and that of her highly academic, research-oriented parents, who believed religion was the opiate of the masses. As Remen gravitated toward academics and serving the world as a medical doctor, her grandfather became an "island of mysticism in a vast sea of science." But over time, Remen discovered that two seemingly divergent paths could lead to the same destination, especially as she learned to blend her spiritual beliefs with her medical treatment.

Remen uses the heart-rending stories of her patients to teach readers how to follow in her example, that is, combining a life of service with a life of receiving and giving blessings (a combination that avoids common problems such as burnout, self-sacrifice, and navel gazing). Remen also includes personal stories of her grandfather, who showered the world with his mystical beliefs and wizened blessings. While this story-by-story structure is similar to the bestselling Kitchen Table Wisdom, it is still a tearful and satisfying formula. --Gail Hudson

The title of the book, "My Grandather's Blessings: Stories of Strength, Refuge, and Belonging" says it all. The author, in relating what she learned, gleaned, absorbed from her Grandfather and translated those learnings, those blessings into her own life opens doors, essential doors, into the life of the individual who is reading the book. Dr. Remen explores some of the deep, basic needs of life, needs that are often not realized, glossed over and not realizing their significance in living life abundantly. Blessings are given a new meaning and the importance, the vitality of both giving and receiving. Intentional living comes to mind.

How to Mellify A Corpse: And Other Human Stories of Ancient Science & Superstition Review

Because I worked on the publicity for this book and managed Vicki's blog tour, this is more a "talk" than a review. While I have mentioned books I've worked on in Mailbox Monday before, I've never reviewed or otherwise promoted a book I worked on, although InkWell does have many fabulous historical authors as clients. That being said, I think this book is a totally delightful read and its subject matter is absolutely perfect for discussion on this blog. Now that the boring disclosure part is out of the way, let's get down to business...

In the cheekily titled How to Mellify A Corpse, Vicki León once again (her other credits include the wildly popular Uppity Women series and Working IX to V) takes readers on a journey through the whacky, bizarre, and downright odd practices employed by the early inhabitants of civilization, this time turning her historian's eye to the area of ancient science and superstition. The word "mellify" refers to the process of mellification, an early technique for mummifying a corpse using honey. To me, it sounds like something straight off a modern spa menu - how's that for a body wrap?! - but back before potent chemicals like formaldehyde existed, it was a very real method of embalming. Alexander the Great even specifically requested that his own corpse be preserved in this manner.

The book's chapters are divided geographically by civilization: Athens & Attica, Greece & the Greek Islands, Asia Minor & the Middle East, Rome & Environs, Italy & Sicily, and Egypt, Carthage, & North Africa, so the reader has the option to jump around or read straight through. Topics discussed are as varied as the history behind belief in the evil eye to the invention of the first aqueduct. León states in her introduction, "Meteorite worship; bean taboos; bizarre beliefs about women and their powers over hydrocarbons; it's all here." A trait I love about all of León's books is that she not only focuses on the most famous/infamous people from history, but also unveils the lives of interesting characters not typically mentioned in the history books. Come back tomorrow for a guest post by Vicki in which she highlights the life of Cleopatra and one of her lesser-known contemporaries, Queen Amanirenas of Meroe (a giveaway will also be included with this guest post).

How to Mellify A Corpse is no ordinary look at history; León brings a stylized humor and wit to her writing that makes Greco-Roman culture come alive in a way that is equal parts fascinating and fun. The pages are also illustrated with funny political cartoons and graphics with hilarious captions that compliment her writings perfectly and add that little extra je ne sais quoi. With the spirited panache that has become Leon's trademark, this uppity woman proves learning about ancient science and religion can be a jocular, rollicking adventure.

How to Mellify A Corpse: And Other Human Stories of Ancient Science & Superstition Overview

In How to Mellify a Corpse, Vicki León brings her particular hybrid of history and humor to the entwined subjects of science and superstition in the ancient world, from Athens and Rome to Mesopotamia, the Holy Land, Egypt, and Carthage. León covers subjects as diverse as astronomy and astrology, philosophy and practicalities of life and death (including the titular ancient method of embalming), and ancient mechanical engineering. How to Mellify a Corpse of course invokes legendary thinkers (Pythagoras and his discoveries in math and music, Aristotle's books on politics and philosophy, and Archimedes' "Eureka" moment), but it also delves deeply into the lives of everyday people, their understanding and beliefs.
A feast for the curious mind, How to Mellify a Corpse is not only for those with an interest in the experimental: it's for anyone who's inspired by the imagination and ingenuity humanity uses to understand our world.

You could rebuild society with this book, and smile while you did it. - Esri F. Allbritten - Boulder, CO USA
Vicki Leon's books are always entertaining, but I've often thought that they're also manuals for civilization. Her latest is loosely structured around the ways science and superstition have coexisted since earliest times. But mostly, I was astonished at how much B.C. and early A.D societies have in common with our own, and the high level of achievements these early society had in theoretical science (Theory of atoms!), architecture (Concrete we've only just now learned to recreate!) and government (Banking! Rail transport! Chemical weapons!). Makes you realize how dark the Dark Ages really were.

Leon's writing is funny, her research is up-to-the-minute, and her material is riveting. As a bonus, if we ever have to re-invent taxation, coinage, and sewage, or figure out which battle strategies work and which are doomed to fail, well...it's comforting to know that these books exist. Leon's books are equal parts laughter and learning. I can't recommend them enough.

A Very Informal Look at the Ancient World - G. Poirier - Orleans, ON, Canada
Many a scholarly tome has been written about ancient science and ancient superstitions. But this book is clearly not one of them. The author has approached these topics by writing a variety of little three-or-four-page snippets - eighty seven of them in total - and divided them into six main sections, each representing a geographical area around the Mediterranean Sea. However, these areas significantly overlap. As a result, the reader often encounters the same individuals and locales from one section to another. The snippets can be read in any order; as a result of this, the book contains a fair amount of repetition in the sense that a given individual may be introduced as many times as he/she appears in the book - and some appear a great many times.

As an ancient history buff, it took me a while to get used to reading this book. The writing style is, well, unusual. Although the prose is friendly, lively, often quite humorous and entertaining, it is laced with "cool", "mod" or "hip" expressions and "with it" ways of saying things, e.g., ( p. 223) "Octavian became the Big Mozzarella of Rome...". There are also some historical inaccuracies, e.g., (p. 227) "Emperor Hadrian summitted [Mt. Etna] on February 5 of the year A.D. 62" when in fact Hadrian was born fourteen years later in A.D. 76. Consequently, this book appears to be aimed at the general reader who is not picky about historical precision but mainly wants to be entertained, a la chilling with some cool ancient dudes. Nevertheless, serious ancient history buffs may find at least some new and fascinating information within its covers. I did.

FANTASTIC History! - Lucy's Reviews- Enchanted By Josephine - Montreal, Canada

History, mythology, science, cosmetology, superstition...This book's got it all! This was my first time reading a book by Vicky Leon- and- I swear it won't be the last!
I had no idea what I would be getting from a book with a title as unusual as this one. I was almost afraid it might be too scientifically morbid, or maybe too technical...WOW- I couldn't have been more off!

This is a FANTASTIC book! How To Mellify a Corpse is definitely the most fascinating and (yes) exciting history read ever.
Just released today, this tiny 7" x 7", 300 page book is filled to the rim with stuff I had never even heard about. So at this point, I must give you some examples of shocking truths I was unaware of...For one, lead was the `in thing of the day- they used it for almost everything; from sweetener (gasp!) to fermenting agent, to cosmetics and dental work too (shocked!). Also, I finally got to learn the origin of the `evil eye' myth and who might be most susceptible. Last, but in no way least, the connection between honey, mollifying and Alexander The Great, finally clicked- unbelievable stuff!

There is so much material covered in this book that will keep you glued (pun;) and completely awestruck. A cross between senseless ideas that made so much sense; to the simplest of creations that breathe pure genius, How To Mellify a Corpse makes reading about ancient history fun and entertaining. Vicky Leon's history knowledge is impressive as well as immeasurable. Backed by an incredible amount of research and accuracy, How to Mellify a Corpse offers an ocean of historical information that's actually a blast to read!

I highly recommend this book and am bumping it way up my list of most favourite non-fiction reads.
I now look forward to reading another of Leon's top notch books: Uppity women of The Renaissance (I can't imagine what concoctions they were upto!)

Entertaining, Fascinating, Original and Educational as well ... I am so impressed with how good this book is!
