The 360 Degree Leader: Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization Review

John C. Maxwell's "The 360 Degree Leader" was, to me, a motivational exploration of excelling in business leadership no matter what your position or place within an organization. The book was well laid out and covered a myriad of organizational myths that exist to this day within corporate culture in organizations all around the world, which lead to frustration, lack of productivity and resentment if adhered to.

Leadership is not about a title; it is all about influence and earning the right to lead daily through every encounter with every person you meet and having the wisdom and maturity to be sincere in your interest and genuine in your intention to put your leaders, your team, and your shared projects first and foremost above self interest and ego. I realize that this is not an easy task, as I think back to when I worked in a large organization and had to deal with difficult individuals at different levels. I appreciated when he stated that we choose how we view people within our sphere of influence, and that it is not our job to fix them but rather to find ways in which we can value and appreciate them, and the ways in which they are assets to the team and to the organization. This is not an easy task, but I believe growth will result if we work towards seeing people in that light, as then we can add value to their strengths and build solid professional relationships as we work together. It is my opinion that without strong, focused teams that are coherent and united towards a common goal, creativity and communication are inhibited. I want to be a team member that sees and works with others on my team in this way. I know it won't always be easy, but it is a goal worth working towards.

He explains the challenges that leaders today face when they feel trapped in their position and/or unrecognized, or frustrated by having an ineffective leader, as well as the challenges of multiple responsibilities that face many in this economy and he goes on to deal with resolutions that can, when we address the issues at large, change our attitudes and enhance our productivity. I want to have the attitudes that John Maxwell describes in "The 360 Degree Leader," which can allow me to find satisfaction in enjoying my journey, starting with right where I am here and now without having my personal satisfaction hinging on the realization of a goal that I've set for the future. Having attitudes that build solid, foundational relationships within a team or organization, appreciating other's strengths and committing yourself to adding value to your team can only result in greater overall personal satisfaction.

"The 360 Degree Leader" is a book that can be enjoyed and used as a tool to foster growth no matter what your position within an organization. I also highly recommend it to consultants and the self employed, as I found a wealth of information that motivated and challenged me as I gained new insights into how to best work within a group successfully and truly identify what should be our shared, common goal.

Thanks for reading my review!

Part of what you are paying for is an online assesment of where you currently stand with respect to the principles and processes described in this book. Maxwell states that you should do this online assesment before reading the rest of the book. You need a code from the flyleaf of the book in order to do this.

The Reconnection Review

I'm not sure where I first heard of the book called The Reconnections or when I first heard of Dr.Eric Pearl, but I am glad that I did on both accounts. I am still reading this amazing book so I won't spoil it for you by telling you about the plot, however I will talk about the experience I had while reading the book & what the book has done for me so far.

The first thing I noticed while reading the book called The Reconnections was, my body was vibrating.(I thought to myself, is this normal?Turns out from friends of mine who has the book & other readers it is normal because the same thing has happen to them.)

Other times my bedroom light would always flicker on & off while reading the book. I would always feel or sense people or maybe a better term to call them is spirits were there with me & that feeling did not go away after I put the book down.I just couldn't see these spirits.

Until one night while reading a book, this woman appeared next to me. By her figure I could tell she was female, but she did not look like any female I ever saw before. She was made totally out of light. She held my hand & told me, "don't worry, the world shall here of you."

Suddenly in a blinding flash of light she was gone, almost as she was never there. I thought to myself, was it just a dream? I looked down & realized, no it couldn't have been a dream because here I was reading the book. I was wide awake. No, it could not be a dream.

Since reading this book it has unlocked lost childhood memories where I would see orbs of light in the sky or disc shapped crafts. Sometimes I would be take aboard these crafts. I have total recall of these memories now.

At first I thought I was abducted by aliens, but since these early childhood memories have flooded my mind, I've learned I am not an abductee, but rather more a contactee.

I have also learned the reason why I felt different from those around when I was growing up & this made it hard to fit in is because I'm really a starchild now an adult.

Listen, I am not saying you will experience this when you read this book. You might experience something or you might not. I just had to tell somebody about all the wonderful things this book has done for me
so far!

Interesting - Susan Mavity - Byron, Illinois
I found this book after working with the Keys of Enoch. I liked his story about how his work has unfolded. I thought it was intriguing and left me wanting to read more. The last half was about the work and promoting his personal technique. He tells an authentic story of a path we all travel from skeptic to healer. I have found there are many ways to heal and reconnect the body systems. I enjoyed his book. It has great information and offers a wonderful way to reconnect with all aspects of our inner worlds.

The author certainly makes a cogent case for his genre of healing, but it seems to beg more information as to 1) how it actually works and 2) how for the rest of us to get it to work in the first place.

Eric Pearl's Book ..read it...touch it...experience it! - Coregon - OR, USA
I read this book last year..in stages. The reason I read it in stages is because the book kept disappearing on me and I'd find it months later and start again. After the 3rd time this happened, I decided that "losing" the book over and over was not a weird coincidence..that in fact this was how I was suppose to read it..I normally read very fast and sometimes skim over parts in my impatience to get to the end. Reading it this way gave me time to absorb what he was saying in the book. From the moment I started reading it, I started having dreams and messages sent to me. Eric Pearl mentions this in the book: You have only to TOUCH his book (as noted by other readers of his book) to experience this energy he is talking about. Reading this book is an interactive experience and a journey.

I highly recommend this book. Eric is a great writer with lots of humor and just when you have a question about what he is saying..he answers it. ** By the way..I still haven't quite finished the book..got to the last 10 pages or so, and lost it again! :)....and I never lose my books..this is a first..I actually found it last time in the back of my car in a box of items going to the thrift store..something told me (very strongly!) to take everything out of the box before I dropped it off, and there it was at the bottom of the box!)

Check Out Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art for $7.00

Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art Review

Improvisation seems to be a black hole in the social dance world. It is one of those skills that oftentimes seems underdeveloped, overdone, misunderstood, or ignored altogether. I have seen salsa instructors teach entire routines based on their own improvisations, only to have them repeated by their students step-by-step on the social dance floor without a thought given to the dynamics of the music or relationship with one's partner. All social dances suffer from a lack of understanding and lack of confidence among its participants when it comes to improvisation. And it seems there isn't really a clear path for learning how to break away from the structure and attain that beautiful - and skillful - quality of spontaneous creativity.

Stephen Nachmanovitch's beautiful book offers enriching reflections for any dancer to meditate on. The author himself is a musician and a poet, but he approaches improvisation and creativity in a way that is accessible to devotees of all art forms and every discipline in life that prizes being in the moment. He offers a number of examples from the worlds of art and music, but my dancer's perspective did not have to make great leaps to apply these concepts to the skills required to improvise and express oneself on the dance floor.

What I found so refreshing about the book was how rich his thoughts are on the topic. After reading several books on mastery and creativity that seemed superficial, fluffy, and more like self-help literature than deep reflection and analysis, Nachmanovitch's book was a true pleasure to delve into. His writing manages to be at once intellectual and inspiring while covering concepts such as the power of limits and mistakes, the value of inspiration and judgment, and the tension and reward of creative collaboration. These topics touch not only on musicality and improvisation but on technique and partnering as well. Though he never directly refers to the concept, a number of his thoughts seem to coincide perfectly with the conditions and characteristics of flow, and I finished his book with a more well-rounded appreciation of flow in social dance. I found it interesting to read in the author's biography that he holds a PhD in the History of Consciousness.

Nachmanovitch's own introduction offers great insight into his vision for Free Play: "I began writing this book as an exploration of the inner dimensions of improvisation. I found it inescapably fascinating that the conception, composition, practice, and performance of a piece of music could blossom in a single moment, and come out whole and satisfying. When I first found myself improvising, I felt with great excitement that I was onto something, a kind of spiritual connectedness that went far beyond the scope of music making. At the same time, improvisation extended the scope and relevance of music making until the artificial boundary between art and life disintegrated. I had found a freedom that was both exhilarating and exacting. Looking into the moment of improvisation, I was uncovering patterns related to every kind of creativity; uncovering clues as well to living a life that is self-creating, self-organizing, and authentic. I came to see improvisation as a master key to creativity."

I always try to balance my reviews by offering constructive criticism and areas for improvement. However, this book did not really allow me room to do so. While some chapters were more interesting and applicable to the world of dance than others, I found so many gems throughout the book and have returned to it often since. While reading it will not directly improve one's improvisation on the dance floor, for many dancers I believe it can provide the mental shift required to open oneself up to inner creativity, outward expression, and meaningful improvisation.

Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art Overview

This book is about the inner sources of spontaneous creation. It is about where art in the widest sense comes from. It is about why we create and what we learn when we do. It is about the flow of unhindered creative energy: the joy of making art in all its varied forms.

Free Play is directed toward people in any field who want to contact, honor, and strengthen their own creative powers. It integrates material from a wide variety of sources among the arts, sciences, and spiritual traditions of humanity. Filled with unusual quotes, amusing and illuminating anecdotes, and original metaphors, it reveals how inspiration arises within us, how that inspiration may be blocked, derailed or obscured by certain unavoidable facts of life, and how finally it can be liberated - how we can be liberated - to speak or sing, write or paint, dance or play, with our own authentic voice.

The whole enterprise of improvisation in life and art, of recovering free play and awakening creativity, is about being true to ourselves and our visions. It brings us into direct, active contact with boundless creative energies that we may not even know we had.

Free Play - K. Heffner - Norwalk, CT United States
I have been an artist, a writer, and teacher of creativity for many years. For the last five years I have interviewed artists, writers, composer, filmmakers, musicians, (and anyone else creative I can get my hands on) about their creative process.

I was a passionate collector of books on all aspects of creativity from business to fine arts.
Then a few years ago I found this little book. It said concisely and eloquently everything (and more) I would have said if I had wanted to write a book on creativity. I have lost count of the number of copies I have bought, shared, given away. I just bought another because I realized I had given my last copy away (again).

This is a book about how to understand what we do when we create (when we get it right) and why. I not only resonated with what he has written, I gained clarity and new ways to think about creativity.
Magnificent.

Run, don't walk to get a copy - Jeffrey Agrell - Iowa City
The mother of all books on (nonjazz) improvisation. A must have for any musician, anyone who ever thought about making up their own music, and a definite must for all those musicians (read: classical musicians) who have never considered making up their own music. They just might, after reading this. It's not a method, but it will inspire you to start discovering your own voice in music.

The process of creating - Sina Khasani -
Extremely insightful book about improvisation and creativity, with words of wisdom on every page. Calling improvisation the "default state of mind", Nachmanovich describes the infrastructure of a creative life and analyzes the inner process of making art. The book makes you want to pick up your instrument and enter the infinite world of music. Must-read for the creative artist or any free spirit.

Change Your Thoughts - Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao Review

I have never been big on self-help books, but this is a book that belongs in several reading categories, self-help being only one of them. Dyer has taken the Tao Te Ching, a wonderfully open and peaceful source of Taoist philosophy, and he has interpreted each verse in ways to make the advice practicable in your own life. He makes suggestions, offers examples, and continuously stresses the Taoist concepts of being open to what is happening around you and the idea that sometimes the "ride" is the best part of a life occurrence. I have purchased several copies of this book since it was published because I often give them away to friends "in need". I highly recommend this book for a life in turmoil or a life in "perfect balance".

Change Your Thoughts - Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao Overview

Five hundred years before the birth of Jesus, a God-realized being named Lao-tzu in ancient China dictated 81 verses, which are regarded by many as the ultimate commentary on the nature of our existence. The classic text of these 81 verses, called the Tao Te Ching or the Great Way, offers advice and guidance that is balanced, moral, spiritual, and always concerned with working for the good.

In this book, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer has reviewed hundreds of translations of the Tao Te Ching and has written 81 distinct essays on how to apply the ancient wisdom of Lao-tzu to today’s modern world. This work contains the entire 81 verses of the Tao, compiled from Wayne’s researching of 10 of the most well-respected translations of text that have survived for more than 25 centuries. Each chapter is designed for actually living the Tao or the Great Way today. Some of the chapter titles are “Living with Flexibility,” “Living Without Enemies,” and “Living by Letting Go.” Each of the 81 brief chapters focuses on living the Tao and concludes with a section called “Doing the Tao Now.”

Wayne spent one entire year reading, researching, and meditating on Lao-tzu’s messages, practicing them each day and ultimately writing down these essays as he felt Lao-tzu wanted you to know them.

This is a work to be read slowly, one essay a day. As Wayne says, “This is a book that will forever change the way you look at your life, and the result will be that you’ll live in a new world aligned with nature. Writing this book changed me forever, too. I now live in accord with the natural world and feel the greatest sense of peace I’ve ever experienced. I’m so proud to present this interpretation of the Tao Te Ching, and offer the same opportunity for change that it has brought me.”

unChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks about Christianity... and Why It Matters Review

UnChristian:
What a New Generation Really Thinks about Christianity
Sean McDowell

According to a recent Barna Research study, the perception of Christians by outsiders (non-Christians) is shockingly low. Disdain for evangelicals by young outsiders is overwhelming and negative (49 percent). According to David Kinnaman, President of the Barna Research Group, and author of UnChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks about Christianity, "Only a small percentage of outsiders strongly believe that labels `respect, love, hope, and trust' describe Christianity. A minority of outsiders perceives Christianity as genuine and real, as something that makes sense, and as relevant to their life" (27). Young outsiders have largely lost their respect for the Christian faith. And it's not primarily due to our beliefs, but to our words and actions.

You might be thinking, "So what? Who cares what outsiders think of us? Jesus was persecuted for standing up for the truth and so will we." While there is certainly some truth to this, it misses a huge point: if we have failed to accurately represent the grace that Jesus offers us--if we have been poor ambassadors of a holy and loving God--then we should care deeply what others think of us. Kinnaman says that if we do not deal with our part of this problem then we will fail to connect with a new generation of young people. Personally, as someone who works with young people and sees the reasons many reject Christ, I could not agree more.

Kinnaman lists the six most common perceptions outsiders have of Christianity. These findings are deeply sobering to me. It saddens me to think that Christians are viewed so negatively by younger generations today, because I know that many times these perceptions act as stumbling blocks preventing them from considering the claims of Christ.

1. Hypocritical--Outsiders largely think that Christians say one thing and do another. They believe we do not act consistently with our beliefs. They claim that Christians pretend to be something on the outside that is not real. Christians are simply not known for being transparent, real, and authentic. As far as studies go, this claim rings true. There is little difference in the behaviors of born-again Christians compared to outsiders on issues such as gambling, visiting pornographic sites, gossiping, visiting a psychic, or to steal.

2. Too focused on getting converts--Outsiders often feel more like targets. They feel as if we merely want to get them "saved" and then move on to another accomplishment. Few report feeling genuinely loved by Christians. According to most outsiders, we are not good listeners. The majority of young outsiders do not feel that Christians show genuine interest in them as people. In fact, the reputation of Christians, says Kinnaman, is similar to Mormons evangelists! Most outsiders report having a time of spiritual openness when they were searching for faith, but they couldn't get past the mental, emotional, spiritual, or relational barriers, so they gave up.

3. Anti-homosexual--Young outsiders largely view Christians as hateful, bigoted, and non-compassionate in their dealings with homosexuals. They tend to view Christians as focused on "curing" homosexuals and using political means to silence them. In fact, Kinnaman puts it this way, "The perception that Christians are `against' gays and lesbians--not only objecting to their lifestyles but also harboring irrational fears and unmerited scorn toward them--has reached critical mass" (92). According to many young outsiders, hostility toward gays is synonymous with Christianity (91% agree with this). Christians are often viewed as self-righteous and arrogant in their dealings with homosexuals, the opposite of how Jesus was perceived.

4. Sheltered--Outsiders largely think that Christians have simplistic answers to the deep complexities of life. We are viewed as old-fashioned, boring, behind the times, and not in touch with reality. Many think that we live in our own world, isolated from the real problems and complexities of life. Christians are largely viewed as ignorant and uninformed, especially by intellectuals.

5. Too political--Christians are often viewed as synonymous with right-wing Republican conservatives. The majority of young outsiders think we are largely motivated by political interests. Kinnaman is not trying to get Christians to disengage in politics--in fact just the opposite. I fully agree; we should be involved in politics as a culture-shaping institution. But his point is to make us aware of our reputation in this arena because it can affect our ability to connect with a new generation.

6. Judgmental--Nearly 90% of outsiders say that the term judgmental accurately describes Christians today. Only 20% of outsiders view the church as a place where people are accepted and loved unconditionally (185). We are known much more for our criticism than for our love. In fact, Christians are more known for what they are against than what they are for. We are so fixated on sin, says Kinnaman, that it impedes our ability to genuinely love broken people. To be sure, taking a stand for Christ today inevitably warrants being viewed as judgmental. But, sadly, much of our reputation comes not from what we believe (although this is partially true), but how convey our beliefs, and ultimately, how we treat people.

With the release of UnChristian, David Kinnaman has established himself as a leading voice among young evangelical Christians (and probably beyond). This is one of the most important recent books for all Christians--whether in "professional ministry" or not--to come to terms with. If his findings are right--and I would bet that they are--the church is going to look radically different over the next few decades. And all Christians have a responsibility to do something about it.

There should be more books like this. - David Kloss -
There need to be more books like this. For those Christians who choose to acknowledge that we live in a complex, real world with lots of messiness, this book will enrich your life as a believer in Jesus Christ.

Real Reading for Real Grown-ups - sienna wood -
I found this book in the Young Adult section of our library, which is unfortunate because it speaks to all ages.

As Christians, our family has always skirted around the edge of the conventional church establishment, and eventually, our frustration with the limited outlook and closed mindedness of the local church mentality just shoved us out altogether. Although we initially felt ostrasized, we reasoned that we were no more outside the loop than we always had been, and we set off on our journey as Christians outside the establishment.

This book is one of a small series moving us on our way, confirming much of what we had been experiencing, and offering much to think about. Unlike many books in the Christian realm, it is not dummied down and filled with inane cartoons. It is thoughtfully written, surprisingly engaging in light of that it is interpreting data, and does not promise simple solutions to complex problems.

Believers in Christ would do well to read this book and seriously consider what it is saying.unChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks about Christianity... and Why It Matters

The Facts are Compelling - Dr. Helena M. Mariades - FLORIDA, US
The title of this book intrigued me. The Barna Group is known and appreciated for it's excellence in capturing snapshots of the cultural and spiritual fruit of the American Christian community. I've been a fan of their research. We need to know the facts, and the facts are compelling. Unchristian examines and explains the 'customer service' reviews of those primarily outside of the American church. According to this book, the overall survey rates our efforts as 'Unsatisfactory' (Or, is it just the effective draconian efforts of the media to sway public opinion against Christians?). Every ministry and Christian should prayerfully review their own efforts and motives in light of these results. I know that it encouraged me to stand more firm in the simplicity of the Gospel and it's power to transform. The suggestions towards more relational and cultural sensitivity are good, but not a fundamental prerequisite to evangelism and spiritual care for our generation. We can and should continue to 'be all things to all men' without any compromise to the standard of righteousness that is uniquely 'Christian'.

The Secret (Seasons of Grace, Book 1) Review

Beverly Lewis has a way of writing truthfully about the Amish sect that lets one whose life is current, that they are people with the same joys and sorrows that are consistent in all humanity. They laugh, cry, make decisions:good and not so good, and carry on secrets from generation to generation in the same way 'worldly' families do.

Good reading to take you out of your own life and into a different daily lifestyle and thought process.

The Secret (Seasons of Grace, Book 1) Overview

In the seemingly ordinary Amish home of Grace Byler, secrets abound. Why does her mother weep in the night? Why does her father refuse to admit something is dreadfully wrong? Then, in one startling moment, everything Grace assumed she knew is shattered. Her mother's disappearance leaves Grace reeling and unable to keep her betrothal promise to her long-time beau. Left to pick up the pieces of her life, Grace questions all she has been taught about love, family, and commitment. Heather Nelson is an English grad student, stunned by a doctor's diagnosis. Surely fate would not allow her father to lose his only daughter after the death of his wife a few years before. In denial and telling no one she is terminally ill, Heather travels to Lancaster County--the last place she and her mother had visited together. Will Heather find healing for body and spirit? As the lives of four wounded souls begin to weave together like an Amish patchwork quilt, they each discover missing pieces of their life puzzles--and glimpse the merciful and loving hand of God.

Bait Of Satan:Living Free From the Deadly Trap of Offense Review

This book is awesome, and will set you free if you choose to allow it to set you free and if you choose to be let free. I just finished reading this book and releasing everyone that I thought had offended me. Wow, what a relief... I refuse to let offense block me from my blessings.

I showed this book to someone just the other day, but something had already told me that they were not ready to receive this message. So many are hurt and don't even realize it. So many are bitter and angry and letting the enemy use them and letting offense block what God has for them.

Well if you don't have a copy you are missing out! I am now currently working on the devotional for 30 days. I am so glad that I have been set free from offense and now I have knowledge of how the enemy tried to keep a foot hold/ strong hold in my life. I know what I will be giving out as gifts, this will bring so many together and set so many free.

Hurry and get your copy so that you can be set free! You will learn so much from this book.

The Bait of Satan - kspurgin -
Although the title is a bit over the top, this book is incredible. I found it extremely helpful and convicting. It is so easy to excuse ourselves when it comes to being offended but the truth is that those offenses only hold us back from experiencing the fullness of God's plan for our lives. I loved the biblical examples of Joseph, David, Saul, Samuel, Eli, and others. Some did this well and others missed their destiny. I also appreciated the author's use of personal illustrations that showed him doing it well and other times not so well. Very good book. I will be recommending this book for years to come.

Perfect Insight On Forgiving & Freedom from Offense. - Debra A. Kelly - Boca Raton, FL
I am only half way through reading this book. But it has ministered to me so powerfully that I have gone ahead and bought 4 more to send to people I care about and want to share what I found. No one can read this book and not want to remain in a unforgiven spirit. It reveals why we go through trials and tribulations. It will expose what is in your heart when you are going through real trials of tribulation. Will it be offense towards God or others? You will read about the trials great men of God encountered and how they came out victorious because they stayed away from offense (Satan's trap!)and they kept their faith in what God promised them. You will read their stories and wonder if you could have been that strong and faithful. This book is a self exam we all need to take! You will find answers to Why am I compelled to tell "my side" of the story? How can I fight thoughts of suspicion or distrust? What can I do to stop rehearsing past hurts? How can I regain trust after someone deeply offends me?
It's a book of self improvement we all can benefit from.

Light from Heaven (The Mitford Years, Book 9) Review

I just finished reading Jan Karon's last book in The Mitford Series, A Light From Heaven, and I kept hoping it would never end. Every book in this series, in my estimation, was as good as, or better than, the previous one. The first one in her next series about Fr. Timothy Kavanaugh is on my bedside table; and even though I've just recently begun reading it, I can tell it's another great book by this lady! For those of you familiar with the Mitford Series, I have just bought my granddaughter the first of the children's books about Cynthia's sweet little white cat, Violet. Again, another wonderful book!
Happy reading,
Judy

It appears that this series is ending. I've read all of them and liked them. Recently I found an English author whose books have a similar but not same tone, and there are a BUNCH of books by this woman, Susan Sallis. You might give them a try.

His Needs, Her Needs: Building an Affair-Proof Marriage Review

I am currently reading this book and find the insights very practical. Harley points out that from his years of practice, there are 10 points of friction that turn up over and over again that may lead people to look to people other than their partner for their resolution. He lists those ten points and presents the five most common points that either men or women mention that provide friction in marriage and possible solutions for each. This book should be viewed as a practical manual for communication within marriages or relationships. Some partners are receptive to communication by words and others by action. If each partner continuously looks for ways to affirm their commitment to the other partner in ways that are meaningful to that partner, any relationship will be long lasting. This book should not be viewed as a panacea or that the items presented are the only things that are really important for a successful relationship. It is simply a practical starting point.

His Needs, Her Needs: Building an Affair-Proof Marriage Overview

Marriage works only when each spouse takes the time to consider the other's needs and strives to meet them. In His Needs, Her Needs, Willard Harley identifies the ten most vital needs of men and women and shows husbands and wives how to satisfy those needs in their spouses. He provides guidance for becoming irresistible to your spouse and for loving more creatively and sensitively, thereby eliminating the problems that often lead to extramarital affairs. The revised anniversary edition of His Needs, Her Needs is a celebration of how the book has helped thousands of couples revitalize their marriages during the last fifteen years. This best-seller identifies the causes of marital difficulties and instructs couples on how to prevent them, guiding them to build a relationship that sustains romance and increases intimacy. Catwalk (On the Runway) Review

I really am starting to think that this is Melody Carlson's best YA series to date. As with the first book, Premiere, I really think that these books are great to pass along to any reader who enjoy the girly type of YA. The characters are realistic but put in fun situations that everyone dreams of. Who wouldn't want to be able to host your own TV show and get to travel to New York and LA interviewing celebrities and discovering the latest fashions?

I really like how the book is from Erin's point of view. Paige comes off as slightly superficial at times while Erin is very down to earth. I think that if I were to meet them in person, I would end up liking Erin very much. Paige sometimes seems to get caught up in all the glitz and glamor while Erin is content with just being herself and doesn't care about what other people think. One example of this is how she is excited to learn about the "green" fashion line because it is one of her passions in her life to be more environmental conscious. Meanwhile, Paige immediately dismisses it because she thinks it's below her. The airport security clearance scene was extremely interesting.

I love all the fashion talk that is in this book. There may be some Christian readers who might complain about too much talk about commercial stuff and that teen girls shouldn't be focused on clothes, labels and having all the in things. Well I'm just going to say that even though you can say that, in reality what girls like and want are completely different. Girls who are into fashion will eat up this book as it's a fun look into the fashion industry without having to go into the seedy side of the business. It's a rough industry but it's also interesting to see that the creative side of the business.

I was also pleasantly surprised to see characters from the Carter House Girls series make an appearance in this book. It's great to see what they've been up to since the ending of their series. It's also a great way to reward fans of Carlson's books to see familiar faces in the story. The ending of the book is a little shocking but it drives home an important point about underage drinking and the influence celebrities have on fans.

As I said I loved this book. It's a whirlwind ride into the fast pace world of fashion and I enjoyed every minute of the trip. I can't wait until the next book in the series. HIGHLY recommended.

Great Christian Read - Dee -
This is the second book in this seris and I have read both of them and was thrilled to find Catwalk on the free book list. This is a great read about 2 young girls breaking into the TV industry as well as the fashion industry. Catwalk is about their time in New York on "Fashion Week".

2nd in On the Runway series is thoroughly enjoyable - Christina Lockstein - Oconto Falls, WI USA
Catwalk by Melody Carlson is the second book in the On the Runway series. Paige and Erin Forrester are on their way to film New York Fashion week for their reality television show On the Runway, but first they both need to walk in a show for a "green" designer, then Erin needs to deal with her best friend Mollie's seeming abandoning her for boyfriend Tony, plus the girls' mother's relationship with Jon is becoming serious. I love this series about two sisters trying to stay true to themselves in the strange world of Hollywood. Paige is the star of the show and trying to keep up her relationship with big star Benjamin. Erin is more comfortable behind the camera and is giving old flame Blake another chance. Paige and Erin have a very believable sisterly relationship with plenty of push-pull and chemistry. They face the real problems of teenagers: parents dating, troubled relationships, and two-faced friends, but with a great twist of glamor. It's the rare young adult Christian series that is completely enjoyable and believable. I can't wait to read what happens next to the Forrester sisters.

Loved it - fun view of the fashion world with lessons to be learned - Crystal Fulcher - Beaufort, NC United States
After reading and enjoying Premiere last week, I was anxious to read the next installment in Melody Carlson's new On the Runway series. Catwalk did not disappoint. In fact I think I enjoyed it more than Premiere. Erin and Paige are now on the roll with their new show, but that doesn't mean that Erin is completely comfortable being in front of the camera yet. Catwalk leads the girls to fashion week in New York and lots of fun and surprises await them there.

I enjoyed reading the various shows and people the girls met along with the new situations they managed to get into and out of. What I thought was really cute about this one, was the presence of the Carter House girls. I have actually only read one Carter House girl novel (but have the rest on my tbr pile) but recognized the main players when Erin and Paige meet them in New York. It was neat to see them again, and if you haven't read the Carter House girl series, no worries, the girls really just make a cameo appearance.

Catwalk has new lessons for both Paige and Erin and I really liked how Melody Carlson brought those lessons about. Both girls had to come to the realizations - this isn't beat you over the head Christianity, this is hey - that makes a lot of sense and having some other players reinforce the lessons really was a great way to handle them.

After finishing Catwalk, I am already anxious for the next installment, Rendezvous which comes out in September. Great characters, a fast-moving plot and lots of fun in the fashion world equals a great read in my book.

My Rating: 4.5/5.0

Check Out Stumbling on Happiness

Stumbling on Happiness Review

In fairness, I haven't managed a thorough read yet. So far, my impression is that skepticism is the starting place and test frame for this author's survey of happiness as a state and a practical possibility. I like his effort. I take a much different approach and you should feel free to do so as well.

I will read it again! - A. Spann - Florida
I so enjoyed reading this book. I was not expecting it to give me the cure for unhappiness. The author tells you in the forward that this is NOT a self help book. It's entertaining, informative, and a very good read. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy psychology.

Acceptable with the Right Expectations - LostButOptimistic -
I recently finished listening to the audio book version of Stumbling on Happiness. Gilbert spends an excruciatingly inordinate amount of time describing the results of research study after research study in an effort to convince the unfortunate receiver of this information that their mind is fundamentally and systematically flawed. Essentially, folks, your mind cannot be trusted.

Eventually though, the author does finally find his way to a conclusion and provides some guidance on finding happiness. To avoid stumbling around like a fool, simply look to your fellow man. You know, the one who despite being saddled with the same inept mental machinery as the rest of us still found his way to happiness. We are left to speculate for ourselves about how this marvelous creature found it, but no worries just follow his example.

Unfortunately, there is one important exception. When it comes to our poor predecessor's proclamation of joy for parenthood, faulty thinking made its way into his head. You see, research shows he is wrong about a child's ability to bring happiness to your life. You must avoid parenthood if you really want blissful fulfillment from your time on the right side of the grass.

So why is it worth 2 stars and what do I mean by the right expectations? If you're willing to slog your way through the research presented in this book, then you could learn common thinking errors that demonstrate persistence across age groups, gender, etc. Knowledge of these errors may, though I suspect the author might disagree here, help you make better decisions.

Go into Stumbling with a high self-esteem and a confidence in your decision making ability. Expect to come out with less of both and learn very little regarding the pursuit of happiness. Perhaps then, you will enjoy the book more than I. Good luck.

Skip to the Last Chapter - Steven Carter - Virginia, MN United States
A long haul. The author never really fulfills his mission. He never adequately summarizes his points although the last chapter comes close. He tries too hard to by cute. He forgets that most people aren't as wealthy as him loses sight of the fact that experiences he portrays as day-to-day events would be luxuries to most readers. Just read the last chapter and you have most of the value of the book. The rest is longwinded filler.

Overwritten and Disappointing - Seoigheach -
I give this book 2 stars because the author's achievement fell so short of his evident credentials to write about this subject. First, the writing. One of the blurbs accurately describes Mr. Gilbert's style as falling somewhere between Gladwell and Sedaris. Mr. Gilbert simply tries to hard to be entertaining on every page, sometimes every paragraph, every sentence. The result is a chatty logorrhea that often dumbs down the underlying science. He also feels it necessary to devote far too much space to rather obvious points (such as the use of statistics in science).

The substantive points of the book are worth making, but they could have been presented with greater depth and fidelity to the background research. They can also be summed up with other reviewers' observations that our ideas about our happiness, others' happiness, future and past happiness are based on misunderstandings or misperceptions of the concept. Mr. Gilbert rather facilely sidesteps the question of what happiness is or might be or whether there are different things confusingly tagged by the single word. Pace, professor, but the elusive nature of what we or others might mean by it cannot be brushed aside by saying you know it when you feel it.

You could get a lot more on this subject by taking an elderly relative to dinner and listening to them discourse about the subject at random.

The Road Less Traveled, 25th Anniversary Edition : A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth Review

Obviously, our parents were the two most significant human beings to guide and shape our opinions, prejudices, learning, and adoption of our worldview or outlook toward the universe. Peck makes that clear, as he details the impact his dad had on him. Depending upon where we went to school, which schools we attended, our religious training, whether in church or catechism or whatever, we learned from those who taught us as we grew up.

One of several individuals that have had an impact upon my thinking is M. Scott Peck--author of The Road Less Traveled. His book's success speaks for itself.

After reading it I followed up with several of his books published afterwards including People of a Lie. Peck was a Christian psychologist/minister/writer. I don't know how he got tagged as being a scientist. He defined his own place in life, not really fitting into the mainstream. It was his thinking out of the box that attracted me to him. He is dead right when he says that as thinking creatures one stops "growing" when he or she doesn't challenge daily about everything they believe and perceive in the universe.

Peck wrote The Road Less Traveled in his late 20's and had one of those unique experiences to be able to find a publisher and publishing it. It became an overnight success. I enjoyed this book because he seemed to understand the human condition and wrote honestly of the struggle of good versus evil. He believed evil existed in the universe.

By the time he had written his 5th book titled Searching for Stones, I had begun to split ways with him. I read it shortly after it was published in 1996. In 2007 I was spending time doing what I do fairly often--reflecting back over my past life and asking myself why I think the way I think and why I believe what I believe. I was reviewing books, teachers, individuals, experiences, and events in life that have made me the personal mental construct that I am with my world view, habits, religious beliefs, and thoughts that make me the person I am. While doing this I recognized that Scott Peck had a significant impact upon my thinking at a point in time starting with the Road Less Travelled. My brother and I had shared quotes from his books through the years. Both of us admired his writings. But, a question lingered in my mind in 2007 as to why I moved on to other writers and his impact upon me at a point in time had diminished. I got on Amazon.com and reviewed all of his books. I knew that at one time I had read of an angelic appearance, as he described it. He had called it a "spirit of mirth". I found this episode in his book Searching for Stones.

In the early 80's he had spent time with individuals who were, according to Peck, demon possessed. One evening he was "accosted by a good spirit." He wordlessly asked "what kind of spirit it was." He speaks of waging a battle with the spirit as to whether he would let it in. Upon doing so, He described how he was consumed with delirious laughter.

I found a reread of this book to be very sad. In it he detailed a great deal of his inner thoughts and thinking. While reading it dawned upon me why I had begun to set Peck's books aside in 1997 and no longer viewed him as mentor. I no longer saw him as a teacher and mentor. I saw him as a struggling human soul making his way through life just like all the rest of us, trying to make sense of life's experiences, who and what we are, God, religion, and purpose and meaning of life. I believe that God uses individuals in our lives as we make our journey. Peck's words were not written in vain. He reached out to others attempting to help and assist them think for themselves and understand life and its mysteries. He ended the Road Less Traveled by stating that the purpose of human existence was to become God. By the time he wrote Searching for Stones in 1996, he said: "As I reread The Road Less Traveled almost twenty years after I wrote it, I am still struck by the truth that was given me. I am also struck by a glib quality to its certainty. I am not as certain about many things as I used to be."

It is this kind of honesty that was characteristic of Peck. Stone's is laced with his humanity. He exposes himself as a human being struggling with life and its meaning and mysteries just like all of us are. It is almost as if when he grew older he realized that he walked on water at a point in time in his life. Now, he was looking down, and found himself sinking. I really didn't need to hear about his struggles with sex, his having sexual relations with his patients, his estrangement from his adult children, or his unfaithfulness to his wife. I felt I saw some of the ego that creeps into the lives of most people who become "celebrities" and are fawned upon by the public. As Bill Clinton said, "I did it because I could." But perhaps, I did need to read about Scott Peck's personal life. And perhaps Scott felt a need in his life to expose his humanity to his readers and admirers, somewhat the way Paul and Peter did when they threw off their clothes and ran naked into the crowds to show they were human beings among human beings. I just know that after I finished reading Stone's a second time, Peck ceased to be a mentor of importance in my life. I saw him as one to pray for and a "brother" rather than a teacher at this point in my life. I put him in a category that he had placed all his mentors in life. He speaks of "having lost all his mentors in life" before he died in 2005. Scott was one of my mentors at one time. I keep his books on my shelf. When I pick them up again to read them I see myself along the path in the journey of life, and my mind can easily drift back to what I was internally feeling and thinking when I first picked up his books to read them. They help me recall the thinking that has laid the brick and mortar of my mental construct. Peck will timelessly have a lot to offer anyone searching for meaning to life.

The Road Less Traveled, 25th Anniversary Edition : A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth Overview

Perhaps no book in this generation has had a more profound impact on our intellectual and spiritual lives than The Road Less Traveled. With sales of more than seven million copies in the United States and Canada, and translations into more than twenty-three languages, it has made publishing history, with more than ten years on the New York Times bestseller list.

Now, with a new Introduction by the author, written especially for this twenty-fifth anniversary deluxe trade paperback edition of the all-time national bestseller in its field, M. Scott Peck explains the ideas that shaped this book and that continue to influence an ever-growing audience of readers.

Written in a voice that is timeless in its message of understanding, The Road Less Traveled continues to help us explore the very nature of loving relationships and leads us toward a new serenity and fullness of life. It helps us learn how to distinguish dependency from love; how to become a more sensitive parent; and ultimately how to become one's own true self.

Recognizing that, as in the famous opening line of his book, "Life is difficult" and that the journey to spiritual growth is a long one, Dr. Peck never bullies his readers, but rather guides them gently through the hard and often painful process of change toward a higher level of self-understanding.

The Road Less Traveled, 25th Anniversary Edition : A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth Specifications

By melding love, science, and religion into a primer on personal growth, M. Scott Peck launched his highly successful writing and lecturing career with this book. Even to this day, Peck remains at the forefront of spiritual psychology as a result of The Road Less Traveled. In the era of I'm OK, You're OK, Peck was courageous enough to suggest that "life is difficult" and personal growth is a "complex, arduous and lifelong task." His willingness to expose his own life stories as well as to share the intimate stories of his anonymous therapy clients creates a compelling and heartfelt narrative.

A well known lawyer highly recommended this book in his classroom. I could not be more pleased with its content.Arguments relevant to my life are easily identifiable. The author's definition of Psychotherapy alone cleared up my misunderstanding of the field. Dr. Peck also clears up the correlation between religion and Psychotherapy. The importance of love in everyday life is highlighted especially as it relates to spiritual growth.

WALKING Review

Thoreau is always amazing regardless of which work I read. Walking is a great short read with numerous valuable ideas which aid in one's thinking. Whether you agree or disagree with Thoreau, you will be conditioned to think for yourself and decide what is best for you, making life all that much better. I highly recommend this book to any "Outdoor Philosopher".

WALKING Overview

"WALKING

by Henry David Thoreau

I wish to speak a word for Nature, for absolute freedom and wildness, as
contrasted with a freedom and culture merely civil--to regard man as
an inhabitant, or a part and parcel of Nature, rather than a member
of society. I wish to make an extreme statement, if so I may make
an emphatic one, for there are enough champions of civilization: the
minister and the school committee and every one of you will take care of
that.

I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who
understood the art of Walking, that is, of taking walks--who had a
genius, so to speak, for SAUNTERING, which word is beautifully derived
"from idle people who roved about the country, in the Middle Ages, and
asked charity, under pretense of going a la Sainte Terre," to the Holy
Land, till the children exclaimed, "There goes a Sainte-Terrer," a
Saunterer, a Holy-Lander. They who never go to the Holy Land in their
walks, as they pretend, are indeed mere idlers and vagabonds; but they
who do go there are saunterers in the good sense, such as I mean. Some,
however, would derive the word from sans terre without land or a home,
which, therefore, in the good sense, will mean, having no particular
home, but equally at home everywhere. For this is the secret of
successful sauntering. He who sits still in a house all the time may be
the greatest vagrant of all; but the saunterer, in the good sense, is
no more vagrant than the meandering river, which is all the while
sedulously seeking the shortest course to the sea. But I prefer the
first, which, indeed, is the most probable derivation. For every walk is

This book is a "must read" classic. - S. M. School - Woodbridge, VA USA
This charming little book catches the essence of Thoreau. This is a new publication of an well-worn and inspiring little book. If you think you just dont't "get" Thoreau, just try this book.

Great essay but... - Robert L. Murphy - Salt Lake City
This is one of Thoreau's best essays. But you can find it free in about fifty places on the internet.

A true classic on your kindle - Gene Bowker - Aiken, SC
I've always loved Walden and Thoreau's other books. The Kindle makes it easy to take it with you. When you are out walking you can have Thoreau's classic words with you.

The book is great, no noticed typos in the book.

The Science of Mind: A Philosophy, A Faith, A Way of Life Overview

This is a book for the ages.In precise and powerful prose it lays out the blueprint for the remaking of the mind and the reenchantment of the world. --Jean Houston, Ph.D., from her introduction In the early part of the twentieth century, a visionary named Ernest Holmes began a journey of exploration and research that profoundly affected thinkers throughout America. His work, based on the teachings of the great philosophers, the sacred wisdom of both Eastern and Western traditions, and the empirical nature of science, offers a philosophy of religion and psychology emphasizing the limitless potential of the human mind. Now, for the first time, The Science of Mind appears in paperback to coincide with the seventieth anniversary of Ernest Holmes's founding of the Religious Science movement. This book contains the fundamentals of Holmes's teachings and is a primary resource used by teaching centers and spiritual healers worldwide. Its universal principles apply to people of all spiritual backgrounds as they describe a higher level of existence attainable through the use of Nature's forces and the power of God. While imparting an unrivaled technique for living, Dr. Holmes's classic guide speaks clearly to a complex world caught in transition and searching for guidance.

Bubblegum New Thought-Avoid It - A. Botnick - Raleigh, NC
I took the introductory course on Religious Science and this book was used as a text. I no longer practice it. The book and religion are terrible. The book is basically an elaborate explanation and text on how to use positive thinking to try to change your life. The author Holmes was wrong on many points such as disbelieving Reincarnation. My observations of the Chaplains using this Religion is that they have very messed up lives so if it doesn't work for them it certainly won't work for the average person. A much better religion is Unity where they have a better reasoned and more effective religion. A much better Unity book I highly recommend is Lessons in Truth.

Interesting, but Old Information - Vince Furfaro -
I believe this work by Ernest Holmes was at the time of it's publication, the leading edge of thought. Viewing it from todays perspective or from our evolved consciousness, it seems like old information.
What it fails to factor in is the only Law in the Universe worth mentioning, and that is Law of Attraction. Law of Attraction is the engine behind everything you see manifest. It wasn't until I was introduced to the Abraham material by Esther Hicks, did the mechanics of the Universe make sense. The Abraham material is the CLEAREST information available on the planet today. It not only explains who we really are, but gives us tools to help us get from where we are, to where we want to be, by closing the gap. It explains that all sickness or dis-ease is only an INDICATOR of how we've been feeling. The way we feel is everything. The way we feel at any given moment is just reflecting what we're focused upon, what we're giving our attention to. Abraham's basic tenant: "You get what you think about, whether you want it or not", and "There's no such thing as exclusion"..which means anything you're talking about, looking at, giving your attention to...whether you want it or not, is going to replicate itself into your life.

Lousy Kindle Version - L. Daniel Slater -
The Science of Mind is a Great Book! Don't buy this version of it (the definitive edition!) For Fifteen dollars, you would expect it to be indexed for search and have a table of contents; but this version does not. The less expensive Kindle versions of this book are just as good.

The Four Loves Review

I'll admit that I haven't read a ton of work by Lewis, but of the work I have read, The Four Loves felt the most scholarly, moreso even than my recollections of Mere Christianity. In The Four Loves, Lewis breaks down the concept of love and analyzes it from a moral and Christian perspective.

He uses familiar scholarly concepts from Plato's day by breaking love into the same four main segments that the Greeks used: Affection, Friendship, Eros and Charity. He adds to this the Christian scriptural reference that "God is Love" and then explores the religious aspects of love.

Some of the scholarly breakdown twisted my brain a little bit and took multiple readings to try and untangle...as he expounded on "Need Love" versus "Gift Love", I was right there with him, but when he started putting forth various in-depth analysis between Venus (sexuality) and Eros (romantic 'being in love'), things started to get muddled...and when he broke into the chapter on Charity, there were a number of theoretical and rhetorical leaps that were difficult for me to follow at times.

Overall though and in spite of moments of confusion, the general message of the book was good and well presented. He provided great insight into the differences between each of the categories presented. The concept of Affection vs Friendship in terms of what makes a 'real friend' was rather intriguing, especially as he continued his examples through love's progression to show how and why friendships are formed or fail to be formed, how and why friendships can grow into romantic relationships or not, and what aspect Charity plays in all of this.

As with Lewis's other books, there is plenty of theological discussion going on. I don't agree with everything he had to say, which is fine, but I think he made some great points. During the last chapter or so as he speaks on Charity, he provides some great nuggets for us to think on as we think about our own charitable behaviors. He also talks about the idea of Charity being both a 'need love' and a 'gift love' and that as we engage in that paradox, we are growing nearer to God's love.

I enjoyed the message of the book and the well thought out and well expressed arguments Lewis makes. The tone of the book was a little too scholarly at times which made it occasionally hard to read (since I've just finished school and am enjoying the break *grin*).

Still, I really like Lewis's insights, research and writing. I enjoyed "Mere Christianity" and "Screwtape" and I'm looking into a few of his other 'theological'/'scholarly' works. He has a nice style and presents great messages without being overly preachy.

The Four Loves Overview

In his classic book The Four Loves, Lewis describes the four basic kinds of human love--affection, friendship, erotic love, and the love of God. Since this is the only commercial recording of C. S. Lewis that is available today, fans of his writing will desire to add this impressive recording to their collection.

While Lewis's writings have impacted more evangelical Christians than perhaps any other writer, this audio product of the author's reading of this classic book will undoubtedly expand the theological understanding of the nature of love to a much wider audience. He explores the love between parents and children, the love of friends, the love of men and women for each other, and the love of God that may enrich all love. He also goes in-depth into questions of sex, possessiveness, jealousy, pride, false sentimentality, manners in loving, and the need for more laughter between lovers.

Lewis's wise and candid reflections on the virtues and dangers of love draw on sources from Jane Austen to Saint Augustine.

This recording features a new audio introduction and commentary by Chuck Colson.

The CD will also include a study guide--perfect for individual or group use.

The Four Loves Specifications

The Four Loves summarizes four kinds of human love--affection, friendship, erotic love, and the love of God. Masterful without being magisterial, this book's wise, gentle, candid reflections on the virtues and dangers of love draw on sources from Jane Austen to St. Augustine. The chapter on charity (love of God) may be the best thing Lewis ever wrote about Christianity. Consider his reflection on Augustine's teaching that one must love only God, because only God is eternal, and all earthly love will someday pass away:
Who could conceivably begin to love God on such a prudential ground--because the security (so to speak) is better? Who could even include it among the grounds for loving? Would you choose a wife or a Friend--if it comes to that, would you choose a dog--in this spirit? One must be outside the world of love, of all loves, before one thus calculates.
His description of Christianity here is no less forceful and opinionated than in Mere Christianity or The Problem of Pain, but it is far less anxious about its reader's response--and therefore more persuasive than any of his apologetics. When he begins to describe the nature of faith, Lewis writes: "Take it as one man's reverie, almost one man's myth. If anything in it is useful to you, use it; if anything is not, never give it a second thought." --Michael Joseph Gross

Kindle Version not edited after OCR - William Lueg - Fort Worth, TX USA
I'm trying to read what should be an excellent book on my Kindle Reader on my iPhone 4. The punctuation is missing on half the sentences. For a paragraph or two, this might be readable, but I can't do this for a whole book! I'm sending it back if possible.

Great book. Dreadful ebook! Truly pathetic work by the publisher. - J. Motter - Atlanta, GA
I am excited every time a book by C.S. Lewis is released in either Kindle or Apple iBook format. Make no mistake: THIS IS A GREAT BOOK. I would give C.S. Lewis 10 stars for the original writing, if possible. However, Mariner Books recent release of this as a Kindle book is absolutely dreadful!

By the time I read just the first few pages I had found SO MANY typos that it is wholly distracting. Countless sentences lack a period at the end. Many words are improperly capitalized or hyphenated. It is patently obvious, Mariner Books did not assign anyone to proofread this text prior to its release in ebook format. It is shameful, and an affront to the great man's legacy.
