Teaching to Change Lives: Seven Proven Ways to Make Your Teaching Come Alive Review

A Review of Teaching to Change Lives

This book by Dr. Howard Hendricks is a very easy read with many relevant personal stories. He lays out seven laws or principles of the teacher. These laws or principles are things that we as teachers can do to make our lessons most effective. He points out that there is more than just preparation and the relating of that information that we have learned through study. The seven laws or principles can be boiled down to that as teachers we must never stop learning. We must determine who our audience is and then teach to them, we also must involve them in the learning process. He says the law of communication is that bridges must be built. Before we can communicate we must have a commonality we have to have relationships because effective teaching is not head to head but heart to heart. We need to encourage our students simply because the motivated individual is a better learner. And the last point is not only do we need to be prepared but we need to help the learner be prepared to learn.
Hendricks has written this book aiming at the Christian educator but the information can be applied to any setting. The principles are sound not just for class room settings both religious and secular but apply equally to the secular workplace for people who may be doing training or even the occasional presentation.
The best quote from this book is "tell the learner nothing and do nothing for him that he can learn or do for himself." I also liked the point made by posing the idea to think about these three statements and ask yourself how, if possible, you could improve each one:
1. Practice makes perfect.
2. Experience makes the best teacher.
3. We learn by doing.
So what do you think can you improve on these statements? Read the book and see if you agree with the insights of Dr. Hendricks.

A guide to improve teaching - David M. Wohlrab - MOBERLY, MO, US
Teaching to change lives by Dr. Howard Hendricks was a surprisingly good book. I didn't expect too much from it and figured it would be like the other teaching books I have read before. I really had no problem sitting down and reading it through. It is a very easy and quick read and it doesn't make you want to put it down out of boredom. Of the seven laws presented in the book I think the one I connected with the most is the Law of the Heart. I found this section to be very practical and true for ministry, at least an effective ministry. In this section under "Earn the right to be heard" Dr. Hendricks makes the statement, "credibility always precedes communication. That's why I'm convinced that some of the most ordinary people in our church are having the most extraordinary ministries, because they have earned the right." I have seen some of the most helpful people in the church be the everyday people who take the time to get to know people and be there for them when they are needed.
The next section that I really connected with was the Law of Encouragement. It is so true that schools are lacking in this. When I was in high school there were very few teachers that went out of their way to encourage the students and to encourage learning. Those teachers were my favorite teachers and in their classes I gave my best effort. This section really hit home for me.
Dr. Hendricks put together a good book here with some really get advice. If you find yourself lacking in any way as a teacher or you know a teacher who is not being as effective as you know they can be, then you should get this book. I have made many notes and plan on changing a few issues I have noticed in me. I think this is a worthwhile book that you may find indispensable.

The book Teaching to Change Lives has a lot of good points and tips for a teacher who desires to not only to teach with power but to teach for a change. Right from the beginning Dr. Howard says, "If you stop growing today, you stop teaching tomorrow." This quote really struck me. I have never had the mindset that the teacher is also a learner. Going in and out of classes for the past 18 years, I have always held the teacher up and thought there was nothing left for them to learn, they know it all. However, this is not the case at all. A teacher must constantly be learning and growing both in spirit and in truth or else they will run out of things to teach.
I believe that the underlying theme in this book was that a teacher does teach to change, but also a teacher teaches to learn. Dr. Howard has a chapter in his book about the law of readiness. Part of being able to teach means you understand what you are teaching. He says that both the teacher and the learner are to be prepared. To me this seems like to be a teacher who changes lives, the teacher has to continue to learn about what they are teaching. Dr. Howard says, "Remember, your goal as a teacher is to develop life-long learners." This should be true for the teacher as well. Teaching is a passion and without this passion to learn you cannot expect your learners to have this same passion.
I think Dr. Howard ends his book very well. He says, "Your success in your calling as an effective teacher depends not on your knowledge of these laws, but on you as a person, and more strategically on your openness to God's power in your life." This is a quote that should be in the teacher's mind forever. A master teacher, as Dr. Chromey says, knows when to get out of the way and let God do His thing because ultimately God is the master teacher and we are just here to relay the message.
