Heaven Review

Here are the significant contributions Alcorn made to my understanding of Heaven. One, it will incorporate the things of earth that I am familiar with, but better. Two, it will be a physical place (and spiritual). Three, resurrection means that God has always intended us to be creatures of soul and body. Four, the meaning of the new heaven and new earth in Revelation and Isaiah. I would recommend a reading of the book to start an investigation of these concepts. Alcorn has written a book that has dramatically impacted the way I read the Bible, opening my eyes to things that I had glossed over. I like how Alcorn uses Scripture to support his views and he has done his homework in reading prior works.

I wish that he could have spent more time on the intermediate state (after we die but before our bodies are resurrected). His book is a bit long, sometimes repetitious. I think the organization could have also been bettter. I also would have liked some details on how the Bible's concept of death and Heaven differs from those of other faiths.

I found that reading Billy Graham's book, Facing Death and the Life After, and Joni Eareckson Tada's book, Heaven, gave different insights and added to my understanding of the Bible texts (which of course is the primary source of our understanding of Heaven). I used Alcorn's book to teach on Heaven in my Bible class. There was lots of interest in the topic.

I am just jumping into this book and I've already learned so much to soothe my soul. I recommend it to anyone who has ever had even a tiny question about heaven and certainly to any Bible teacher, be it Sunday School or a churchwide study.

I really got into this book because of the vivid picture Randy Alcorn paints of heaven. I liked it because he got into a lot of Scripture and Biblically based illustrations, not just opinion - mostly. He brings a well balanced view of what we know about heaven from Scripture, and then presents things that might be. I truly think this is more of a theological representation than most. For myself personally, it has encouraged me in my own hope. But then later in the book, he gets into some more trivial topics - such as coffee in heaven and such. Now to some, that may be an important issue, but to me, it really doesn't matter. But he does cover some other subjects that I have come across in my life and he brought some clarity and verses to back it up, such as animals in heaven, the existence of time in heaven, marriage in heaven, and other things.

Overall it is a great book and is probably one of the most in-depth, authoritative books on the subject in print - other than the Bible itself.
